Acupuncture For Effective Pain Management And Relief

The use of acupuncture for pain relief is gaining acceptance in the U.S. So many people with pain, whether from cancer, headache, or a chronic, unexplained condition, rely on medications, such as morphine, which can become addicting. Acupuncture has no side effects, and other studies have shown the pain relief it provides can last for months.

A 1998 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, for example, showed that medical doctors refer their patients to acupuncturists more than any other "alternative" care provider; the same study also revealed that 51% of medical doctors believe acupuncture to be efficacious and of value.

Inserting needles into key acupuncture points in the body stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These endorphins, cortisol, ACTH will either change the experience of pain or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones that influence the body’s own internal regulating system. Some of these substances are 50 to 100 times more potent at pain relief than many prescription drugs. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities, and promoting physical and emotional well-being.
